What is creative drama?
Experience comes before performance.
Creative drama is an improvisational, non-exhibitional and process-oriented form of drama. Participants are guided by a leader to imagine, enact and reflect on real and imagined experiences.
Rather than attempting to create professional child actors, creative drama uses theatre techniques to guide children towards self-fulfilment.
Play becomes a learning experience.
Creative drama takes children’s natural world and creative play and develops it further. It can include dramatic play, story enactment, imagination journeys, theatre games, music and dance.
It builds artistic sensitivity, awareness of self and others, and each child’s dramatic imagination.
What skills does drama develop?
Communication skills: Drama enhances verbal and non-verbal expression. It improves voice projection, articulation, fluency and persuasive speech. Listening and observation develop through drama games, rehearsing, performing and being an audience.
